Park of environmental information and sensititation “Antonis Tritsis”

The park of environmental information and sensititation “Antonis Tritsis” is located among the municipalities of Agioi Anargiroi, Ilion and Kamatero and is considered one of the last refuges of wildlife in the Athens urban environment.

Since most Attica wetlands have diminished or dried out during the last decades, the five artificial lakes (each one overflowing the other) are highlighted in the scenery and give breath to the aquatic organisms which have lost their habitat.

The park expands to 100 hectares and is a unique spot in Athens, that accommodates birds and is qualified with vegetation diversity.

In 1987, the first projects are elaborated by the Regulating Project of Athens Foundation and the total area of the park is fortified. There was the risk of splitting and be used in a controversial way. In 1993, the Foundation collaborated with the Ministry for the Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works to proceed to the auction of the first layer of the work for the creation of a model ecological park and recreation site.

Members of the Hellenic Ornithological Society observe and record the birds residing in the park, since its creation. During the latest years, 147 different species of birds have been observed. The Society schedules programs concerning the environmental information to denote the natural richness of the Park and the sensititation of the public. The park is a very important area used for hiking , cycling, friendly meetings, social events, activities for naturalists etc.
